The ANC in the eThekwini region says it was not aware of any threats against ward 17 councillor Sbusiso Khwela before he was gunned down at his office on Thursday.
Khwela was allegedly shot by a man who was among residents waiting to receive assistance at the councillor’s office.
The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team has taken over the investigation into the shooting as authorities work to establish the motive behind the killing.
eThekwini Municipality Council Speaker and ANC Regional Convenor Thabani Nyawose said he had not received any reports indicating that Khwela was under threat.
“I’m not aware of any threat that was directed to him. If there were threats, I would have been the first person to be made aware,” Nyawose said.
He said he had also spoken to Khwela’s family following the shooting, but no concerns about threats against the councillor had been raised.
“Even in my engagement with his family, no one shared any information about a threat that was directed to Councillor Khwela,” he said.
Nyawose said Khwela had been working from his office without a security guard because there had been no known indication that he was at risk.
“He was in his office with no protection and no security guard because I was not aware of any threats,” Nyawose said.
The Political Killings Task Team is expected to continue its investigation into the circumstances surrounding Khwela’s death and determine what may have led to the fatal shooting.
