Fifteen people have been killed in a devastating bus crash on the N1 near Touws River in the Western Cape.
Western Cape Traffic Chief Maxine Bezuidenhout confirmed that the accident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday when a bus carrying 73 passengers overturned.
In addition to the fatalities, two people sustained serious injuries and were transported for urgent medical treatment.
Emergency services and traffic officials remain at the scene as rescue and recovery operations continue. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The tragedy comes just a day after another fatal bus accident on the N1 near the Beitbridge Border Post in Limpopo.
On Wednesday, a bus transporting passengers from KwaZulu-Natal to a repatriation camp in Musina overturned, killing the driver.
At least 11 passengers were injured in that crash and were taken to Musina Hospital for treatment.
The bus was reportedly travelling from Durban to the repatriation centre when the accident occurred.
Authorities are investigating both incidents as concerns mount over road safety following the two fatal crashes on the N1 within 24 hours.
