Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Samuel Mashaba is set to continue his testimony before the Madlanga Commission on Friday, where questions are expected to focus on his relationship with alleged informer Tumelo Nku and his involvement in the 2021 Aeroton drug bust.

Mashaba first appeared before the Commission on Wednesday and testified that he received information regarding an alleged drug consignment from Nku, whom he described as an informer.

However, evidence presented before the Commission has raised questions about the nature of the relationship between the two men, suggesting it extended beyond the traditional informer-handler arrangement.

The Commission has put it to Mashaba that he and Nku appeared to share a significantly closer relationship than previously disclosed.

Testimony revealed that Nku had provided Mashaba with information concerning the alleged theft of a large sum of money from a passenger's luggage at OR Tambo International Airport.

Mashaba told the Commission that he subsequently went to the airport in an effort to assist in recovering the stolen property.

He also conceded that he had assembled a team of officers to help recover stolen gold or cash on Nku's behalf.

The Commission is expected to continue probing the extent of Mashaba's interactions with Nku and whether his actions were consistent with standard law enforcement procedures.
