The N6 between Smithfield and Reddersburg has been closed to traffic following a crash involving a heavy vehicle in the Free State.
According to provincial traffic authorities, the truck involved in the incident is obstructing all lanes of the roadway, rendering the route inaccessible to motorists.
Road Incident Management System (RIMS) chairperson Sipho Towa said the road is expected to remain closed for several hours while recovery teams work to remove the vehicle and rehabilitate the affected section of the roadway.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the area and not attempt to drive through the crash scene while emergency and recovery operations are underway.
Alternative routes have been provided for affected road users.
Motorists travelling from Bloemfontein are advised to use the N1 south and exit at either Springfontein or Bethulie before rejoining the N6.
Drivers travelling from Smithfield are encouraged to take the R701 through Bethulie to Springfontein and then connect to the N1 northbound towards Bloemfontein.
Traffic officials said the closure will remain in effect until the truck has been safely recovered and the road has been inspected and declared safe for public use.
Motorists are advised to remain patient, follow traffic directives and allow for additional travel time while the closure remains in place.
