KwaZulu-Natal police have deployed additional resources as the search continues for a former Navy officer who went missing in Hazelmere Dam, north of Durban, while attempting to retrieve a drifting jet ski during a birthday celebration.
The 54-year-old businessman was last seen on Friday after reportedly entering the water to recover the jet ski. He has not been seen since, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple emergency services.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) has been assisting in the search efforts since the incident occurred. Spokesperson Prem Balram said teams have been working tirelessly both on the ground and from the air in an attempt to locate the missing man.
"Our teams worked throughout the weekend in an attempt to find the body," said Balram.
He added that the man's family has remained at the dam throughout the operation as search teams continue their efforts.
In a statement, RUSA said members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police Search and Rescue units are actively combing the area with the assistance of divers and search dogs.
The organisation has also deployed a helicopter, with air crews conducting aerial searches over the dam in the hope of locating the missing businessman.
Authorities have not yet released further details, and the search operation remains ongoing.
