A 69-year-old medical doctor in KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting four female patients at a hospital in Madadeni.

Police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody at his workplace following allegations that date back to August last year.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said the accused allegedly inappropriately touched the victims and, in some instances, forced them to perform sexual acts.

“The suspect would allegedly touch the victims inappropriately on their breasts and private parts, and he also allegedly forced some of them to perform sexual acts on him,” Netshiunda said.

The incidents came to light after the victims reported the alleged abuse to a whistleblower, who then alerted police anonymously.

Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit detectives acted on the information, leading to formal complaints and the suspect’s arrest.

Netshiunda added that additional charges could be brought if more victims come forward.

“Should other victims report similar incidents and open cases, further charges will be added,” he said.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Madadeni Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
