President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation on Thursday afternoon as concerns continue to mount over developments within the South African Police Service.
He will be joined by acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia during the 16:00 briefing.
The address comes against the backdrop of growing scrutiny within the South African Police Service following recent legal proceedings involving senior leadership.
Earlier this week, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola briefly appeared at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. He is facing four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act in relation to a disputed R360-million tender awarded to businessman Vusimuzi Matlala.
The case has been postponed to 13 May, when Masemola is expected to appear alongside Matlala and 12 other police officers.
The unfolding developments have placed increased pressure on the country’s policing leadership, prompting today’s national address.
