City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Executive Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has appointed Tsholofelo Koopedi as acting city manager following the arrest of the metro’s city manager, Kagiso Lerutla.
Koopedi, who currently serves as the city’s head of department for strategy and corporate planning, will assume the role with full administrative authority.
Lerutla was arrested on Sunday at O. R. Tambo International Airport and is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
He will appear alongside suspended acting EMPD chief Julius Mkhwanazi. The 40-year-old faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
The arrests form part of a broader crackdown linked to evidence emerging from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Mayor Xhakaza said Koopedi would take over the running of the administration as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
