KwaZulu-Natal’s economy has received a boost with the reopening of the Gledhow Sugar Mill, a move expected to safeguard around 400 jobs.

The relaunch follows a successful business rescue process that began in 2023, culminating in an investment of nearly R2 billion by new owners to revive the facility.

Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Zuko Godlimpi is expected to attend the official reopening.

Later this week, Godlimpi will shift focus to the broader future of the sugar industry when he signs Phase 2 of the Sugar Industry Master Plan in Mount Edgecombe.

The next phase of the plan aims to build on cooperation between government, business and labour to stabilise and transform the sector, which remains a key contributor to the provincial economy.
