Holidaymakers visiting Durban this Easter can expect full access to the city’s coastline, with all 23 bathing beaches set to remain open.

Cyril Xaba confirmed that extensive safety measures will be in place, including the deployment of 200 lifeguards along the coastline from 6:00am to 6:00pm daily.

“We urge beachgoers to cooperate with lifeguards by swimming in designated areas and avoiding entering the water under the influence of alcohol,” Xaba said.

The eThekwini Municipality also reported progress in housing initiatives, with more than 100 permanent homes in Cornubia expected to be completed by April for families displaced by flooding.

Meanwhile, the Border Management Authority has announced plans to tighten operations at 71 ports of entry during the busy travel period.

Commissioner Michael Masiapato said authorities will intensify the detection and processing of undocumented travellers, while also strengthening access control and taking firm action against corruption.

He emphasised that all travellers must comply with immigration requirements, including presenting a valid machine-readable passport with at least two blank pages.

Masiapato also highlighted additional requirements for those travelling with children, noting that consent documentation is essential.

“If a father is travelling with a child without the mother, he must have an affidavit or written consent confirming she is aware of the trip. Guardians must provide written consent from both parents,” he said.

He added that the measures form part of efforts to combat child trafficking and ensure the lawful movement of minors across borders.
