eThekwini Municipality is repairing multiple cable faults to restore electricity to parts of Chesterville and surrounding areas. Technicians say power has already been restored to some areas.

The outage began on Monday following a medium-voltage cable fault between the Bramcote Distributor Substation and the Mayville High Voltage Substation. Municipal Energy Management Directorate technicians initially attempted to restore supply via an alternative connection from the Kaledon Distributor Substation.

However, a further fault on the feeder cable between the Ridgeview Substation and Kaledon Substation caused a wider outage affecting Chesterville and nearby communities.

The municipality confirmed that the original fault at Bramcote has been repaired and some residents have electricity restored. Work continues on the remaining damaged cable to ensure full power restoration.

“Work continues on the remaining affected cable to ensure the full restoration of the electricity supply to all affected residents,” the City said in a statement. “We acknowledge the inconvenience caused by this outage and appreciate the patience and understanding of residents as our dedicated teams work to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Meanwhile, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, an employee of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality narrowly survived electrocution while on duty in Nhlwathi. Jimmy Msimang reportedly stepped on live wires at the Matshemhlophe Water Supply Scheme on Sunday.

Recent storms had caused widespread damage in the area, knocking down power lines and leaving several communities without electricity.
