Police have urged members of the public to report wrongdoing after a video circulating on social media allegedly showed officers extorting money from detainees.
The footage, reportedly filmed at Park Station in Johannesburg, appears to show two members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) soliciting bribes from undocumented foreign nationals.
It is alleged that the individuals were arrested and then forced to pay money in exchange for their release.
In the video, a uniformed officer is seen speaking to a man dressed in a red shirt and cap. The man appears to remove cash from his pocket, count it and hand it over to one of the officers.
SAPS Divisional Commissioner for Human Resource Development, Bongiwe Zulu, said the allegations are being treated seriously.
“We will locate which particular police station is involved. The provincial commissioner where the incident occurred will immediately attend to it,” she said, adding that disciplinary procedures would be instituted to ensure any members found guilty are held accountable.
The incident coincides with a two-day Fraud and Corruption Imbizo hosted by SAPS, aimed at strengthening integrity within the service and rebuilding public confidence.
Zulu said the campaign also calls on communities to play an active role in reporting misconduct.
“If police fail to uphold their oath and serve with integrity, we must ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. We cannot be the ones contributing to crime,” she said.
Authorities have appealed to the public to come forward with information, reiterating the message: if you see corruption, report it.
