Accused number two, Bongani Ntanzi, has distanced himself from a confession statement that allegedly details the roles of his four co-accused in the murder of former Senzo Meyiwa.

Ntanzi is expected to return to the witness stand at the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa in Pretoria, where he and four others face charges relating to the 2014 killing of the South Africa national soccer team captain.

The State has previously argued that Ntanzi’s confession played a key role in the arrests of his co-accused, alleging that the statement implicated them in the crime.

However, under questioning in court, Ntanzi rejected that version of events, telling the court he did not know most of the men listed in the statement at the time of the murder.

Responding to questions from defence counsel, Ntanzi said he only recognised one of the accused.

“My lord, I’m seated here with the gentlemen in the dock. I do not know them. The only person that I know here is my brother, Sibiya. The other three gentlemen are unknown to me,” he testified.

His denial casts doubt on the reliability of the alleged confession and is expected to form a key part of ongoing proceedings as the high-profile trial continues.
