The High Court in Polokwane has found a 58-year-old man guilty of murdering his wife outside Lebowakgomo Hospital in Limpopo, in a case that has drawn attention to the dangers faced by victims of domestic violence.
Fannie Seribishane was convicted of fatally shooting his wife, Mumsy Seribishane, in 2024 as she arrived for work at the hospital.
The court heard that the attack occurred in broad daylight, with the accused opening fire as the victim was about to report for duty.
Judge Karin Pillay said the State’s evidence, including forensic testimony from a ballistic expert, conclusively linked the firearm used in the killing to the weapon found in Seribishane’s possession at the time of his arrest.
The court also noted that the victim had previously obtained a protection order against her husband and had initiated divorce proceedings a year before her death.
In delivering the verdict, Pillay found Seribishane guilty of murder and multiple related offences, including violating the protection order and contravening provisions of the Domestic Violence Act and the Firearms Control Act.
“I am satisfied that you are guilty in respect of count one, murder,” Pillay said, outlining the various legislative breaches connected to the case.
Sentencing proceedings have been scheduled for 15 April.
The conviction marks a significant step toward justice in a case that has underscored the ongoing impact of domestic violence and the importance of enforcing protection orders.
