South Africa’s beloved tradition of braaiing is becoming increasingly costly, with the latest January Braai Index reporting a sharp rise in food prices.
The index recorded a 2.6 percent increase month‑on‑month, driven largely by higher costs for beef, chicken, and essential vegetables. Year‑on‑year inflation was more modest at 1.1 percent, but consumers are feeling the impact of a 19 percent surge in beef prices over the past year.
Economists warn that while overall inflation is expected to remain relatively stable this year, meat prices pose a significant risk to household budgets. The pressure on prices comes amid ongoing concerns over the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, which continues to affect livestock supplies.
For many South Africans, this means that the cost of enjoying a traditional weekend braai is set to rise, prompting some households to rethink their weekly menus.
