Sixteen schoolchildren were injured in a scholar transport accident in KwaZulu-Natal’s Midlands on Tuesday, after the minibus they were travelling in collided with a light motor vehicle on the R617 in Mpophomeni.
Emergency services responded to distress calls reporting the crash and quickly dispatched paramedics to the scene to assess and treat the injured.
Midlands EMS spokesperson Ian Winterboer confirmed that multiple learners sustained injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for further care.
“The roadway is clear at the moment. All schoolchildren are being transported to the necessary facilities for further care, further treatment, and other patients,” Winterboer said.
The extent of the injuries has not yet been disclosed, but authorities indicated that all affected learners are receiving medical attention.
The incident marks yet another scholar transport crash in the province, raising ongoing concerns about road safety and the transport of pupils. Investigations into the cause of the collision are underway.
