Limpopo police have arrested 20 people in connection with various election-related offences since the start of special voting on Monday.

The arrests were made during special voting on Monday and Tuesday, as well as on national voting day on Wednesday.

Provincial police recorded approximately 33 election-related incidents across Limpopo. These include alleged violations of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998, fraud, common assault, malicious damage to property and pointing of a firearm.

Some of the alleged Electoral Act violations involved individuals taking photographs of their marked ballot papers and sharing the images on social media.

Provincial Police Commissioner Jan Scheepers warned that such conduct is prohibited by electoral legislation and compromises the secrecy and integrity of the voting process.

Scheepers welcomed the arrests and commended law enforcement agencies for their efforts in ensuring a safe and peaceful election period.

Police confirmed that some of the suspects have already appeared in local magistrates' courts.
