Political parties and independent candidates have until 5pm on Friday to submit objections to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) before the final results of the 2026 Local Government Elections can be announced.
The deadline comes as the Commission continues to deal with more than 800 complaints lodged by political contestants during the electoral process.
IEC Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Masego Sheburi says most of the complaints relate to allegations that party agents were prevented from observing voting and counting procedures.
He says the majority of these complaints have been resolved, with approximately 106 still outstanding as of Thursday evening.
Sheburi has clarified that political contestants have a separate opportunity to lodge formal objections if they believe irregularities could have a material impact on the declared election results.
These objections must be submitted to the Commission by 5pm on Friday.
He says the IEC will only be in a position to provide a timeframe for announcing the final results once all objections have been considered.
The Commission estimates that approximately 15.9 million South Africans participated in the elections, including those who cast special votes.
