KwaZulu-Natal police have recovered a bakkie stolen in Durban North following a multidisciplinary operation in Manguzi, in the uMkhanyakude District.

The area, which borders Mozambique, has been linked to cross-border criminal activity, with syndicates reportedly targeting bakkies.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo says a Nissan Navara double cab was reported stolen at Durban North SAPS on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Later that evening, officers in Hluhluwe spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen bakkie travelling along the R22 towards Mbazwana.

Ngcobo says the driver allegedly sped off after noticing the police, prompting officers to give chase.

Mbazwana police joined the pursuit, while Manguzi officers were also mobilised as the vehicle continued towards their policing area.

The bakkie was eventually cornered at Phelandaba, where the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a cloned ignition key.

Police have launched a search for the suspect, and investigations are continuing.
