The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Gauteng police are monitoring the N12 freeway between Klipspruit Valley Road and Abubakar Asvat Drive following renewed protests by residents of Nana’s Farm Informal Settlement on Monday night.
The protest action forced the closure of the affected stretch of road, despite earlier efforts by authorities to clear and reopen it.
Residents are protesting over the lack of water, sanitation and electricity in the area, accusing the City of Johannesburg of failing to address their concerns.
The latest unrest reportedly involved protesters barricading the freeway with burning tyres and debris, while vehicles travelling along the route were pelted with stones.
The protests follow further clashes on Monday morning, when police reportedly used rubber bullets to disperse residents gathered near the road.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and have urged motorists to exercise caution when travelling in the affected area.
