Two people have been shot and killed during a political campaign in Umgababa, south of Durban.
The victims are believed to be members of a political party who were conducting door-to-door electioneering in Area 24 when they came under attack.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says three party members and two bodyguards were campaigning when a white Isuzu bakkie approached them from behind.
“The occupants of the bakkie reportedly opened fire on the five using rifles and pistols,” Netshiunda said.
A man and a woman were declared dead at the scene, while another woman reportedly injured her leg as she fled from the attackers.
Police have opened two cases of murder and three of attempted murder.
Investigations into the shooting are continuing.
