The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has denied issuing arrest warrants for March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and her husband, Xolani Zuma.
The denial follows claims by the organisation that the couple could be arrested by Friday, October 16.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NPA dismissed the allegations, saying no arrest warrants had been issued.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the authority operates independently and does not take instructions from political parties or public office bearers regarding its prosecutorial decisions.
“The NPA wishes to categorically deny that any warrant of arrest was issued, and that it does not receive instructions from political parties, holders of public office, or anyone else on its prosecutorial function,” Kganyago said.
He urged individuals and organisations to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims that could misrepresent or undermine the criminal justice process.
KwaZulu-Natal police have also dismissed the rumours surrounding the alleged impending arrests.
March and March claimed that the possible arrests were intended to “cause civil unrest and disrupt the upcoming 4 November local government elections”.
The organisation further alleged that an executive committee meeting had been held to discuss whether the couple should be arrested before or during the elections.
March and March is among the organisations calling for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
The NPA has reiterated that no arrest warrants have been issued for the couple.
