A 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the murder of a two-year-old child at Sekurung village, outside Lebowakgomo in Limpopo.
Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the suspect allegedly took the child from her home, fatally stabbed her and later set a house alight.
Police say the child’s mother could not be located at the time of the incident.
Following the arrest, angry community members allegedly went on a rampage and set the suspect’s homestead alight.
Ledwaba says investigations into the incident are continuing.
Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has condemned acts of vigilantism and urged community members to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and the alleged arson.
