Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers have been shot and killed during a shootout involving police and private security personnel in Umlazi, south of Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda confirmed the revised death toll after police initially reported that four suspects had been killed.

Netshiunda says a manhunt has been launched for other suspects believed to have been involved in the alleged robbery.

He says investigators are pursuing suspects who may have fled the scene, including those who allegedly assisted in the getaway.

“We know with experience that there are getaway vehicles and there are those who were not at the crime scene. So, we don't know how many of them were at the crime scene, but a manhunt is on for those that we saw, which we are pursuing now,” Netshiunda said.

Four firearms were recovered at the scene, while cash believed to have been stolen during the robbery was found in an abandoned vehicle.

Police investigations are continuing.
