Rwanda has signed a 10-year agreement with Formula 1 to host races in the East African country, with the inaugural event expected in the early 2030s.
The race will take place on a newly built circuit in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of the capital, Kigali, and near the city’s new international airport.
The circuit has been designed by former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz.
The announcement marks a potential return of Formula 1 to African soil, more than three decades after the last race was held at Kyalami in Johannesburg in 1993.
In a statement, Formula 1 said the race would provide an opportunity to grow the sport’s presence in Africa, a market it considers relatively unexplored compared with Europe, Asia and the Americas.
The agreement forms part of efforts to expand Formula 1’s global reach and attract new audiences to the sport.
