Israel and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to strengthen cooperation against what they described as “extremist elements” threatening regional security, following a violent incident aboard a Flydubai flight.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar spoke with his UAE counterpart, Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, after the incident involving a flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the two ministers agreed to work together to address security threats.
Meanwhile, Flydubai has temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel while investigations into Wednesday’s incident continue.
The airline said it was cooperating with authorities as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
US President Donald Trump also commented on the incident after speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump described the actions of passengers who helped restrain the alleged attacker as “the most amazing stuff.”
British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said he was “deeply concerned” by the incident but relieved that the aircraft landed safely.
“I’m very relieved that the plane landed safely thanks to the actions of those on board,” Miliband said.
Investigations by the relevant authorities are continuing to establish what led to the confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the aircraft’s emergency diversion.
