The death toll from the mass shooting at a tavern in Wedela on Gauteng’s West Rand has risen to 18.
Police say one more victim has died in hospital following the shooting, which has led to the charges being updated to 18 counts of murder and 18 counts of attempted murder.
The charges also include two counts of malicious damage to property and armed robbery.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brenda Muridili says a dedicated multidisciplinary team has been established to investigate the incident.
The team includes experienced murder and robbery detectives, Crime Intelligence officials and Crime Scene Investigation members.
Muridili says only four of the 18 victims who have died have so far been identified. Two are South African nationals, while the other two are from Lesotho.
All the injured victims who remain in hospital have been identified.
Police say five of the injured victims sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body and are in a critical condition, while the remaining patients are reportedly stable.
Investigations into the shooting are continuing as police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
