Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and power outages in several parts of Durban, disrupting travel and affecting residents.

Flooding has been reported along Umbilo Road and Sydney Road, with the lower parts of Umbilo among the areas affected.

Ward 33 councillor Fran Kristopher says parts of Umbilo, Glenwood and Bulwer are also without electricity.

Kristopher says disaster teams have managed to restore power in some areas, but severe weather conditions have hampered efforts to address outages elsewhere.

She says the heavy rainfall has also placed pressure on the city’s stormwater drainage system, with some drains unable to cope with the volume of water.

According to Kristopher, some stormwater infrastructure has collapsed after being damaged by trucks, while other drains have become blocked by debris.

“We’re now having a lot of flooding across Umbilo Road, Sydney Road, and the lower end of Umbilo,” she says.

Kristopher says she is engaging with the Durban Solid Waste department, city management and other relevant authorities to address the flooding and stormwater problems.

Residents and motorists in affected areas have been urged to exercise caution as heavy rainfall continues.
