The new era of Bafana Bafana under coach Pitso Mosimane is taking shape, with the experienced coach naming his final squad and strengthening his technical team ahead of South Africa’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Mosimane has appointed former Botswana coach Morena Ramoreboli as his assistant as he prepares for his second spell in charge of the national team.
Bafana Bafana will begin their qualifying campaign at home against Guinea at Orlando Stadium on 26 September before travelling to Cairo to face Eritrea four days later.
Mosimane has selected a 30-man squad, with much of the core of the team that represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup retained.
The coach says trimming the preliminary squad from 35 players to 30 was a difficult decision, given the number of eligible players available for selection.
“We had 35 players before from the preliminary squad, players who were eligible to play for South Africa. But we have reduced the 35 to 30 players,” Mosimane said.
He explained that the selection process required extensive research into the players considered for the squad, including assessing who was called up and why certain players were left out.
Mosimane acknowledged that it was impossible to include every eligible South African player, saying reducing the squad was part of his responsibility as coach.
The coach will now turn his attention to preparing the team for the opening qualifiers as Bafana look to make a strong start to their campaign under his leadership.
