Police are investigating whether a man arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Ekurhuleni could be linked to the deaths of other women whose bodies were discovered in the area.
Authorities have yet to confirm the suspect’s nationality.
The man was arrested after the body of a woman was discovered on 15 July in an open field near the R21 in Kempton Park. The woman was found naked and had been restrained with cable ties.
The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday, where the matter was postponed. He remains in custody at the Modderbee Correctional Facility in Benoni.
Deputy National Police Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili, says investigators are using the suspect’s fingerprints to establish his nationality.
Mosikili says police have received information suggesting that the suspect may not be a South African citizen, but his nationality has not yet been confirmed.
Police are also gathering further intelligence to determine whether the man could be connected to any of the other women whose bodies were found in the area.
Mosikili noted that two additional bodies were discovered in the same vicinity after the first woman's body was recovered.
Investigators are now working to establish whether the cases are connected and whether the suspect could be linked to any further murders.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, with forensic and intelligence work expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
