The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has condemned the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Grade 10 learner at Ndengezi Intermediate School in Pinetown.
The learner was shot several times on the school premises on Monday.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says a murder case has been opened.
Police allege that the victim and the suspect were seen entering the school grounds together before the suspect opened fire.
The learner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Netshiunda says the suspect was wearing the same school uniform as the victim before fleeing the scene.
“The motive of the killing is unknown at this stage,” says Netshiunda.
The Education Department has described the incident as deeply disturbing, stressing that schools should remain safe environments where learners can study and pursue their aspirations without fear.
The department says psychosocial support will be provided to learners and educators affected by the shooting.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing are continuing.
