Fear is mounting among refugees and asylum seekers living on the streets of Durban after an anti-migrant group issued a fresh ultimatum for foreign nationals to leave the city.
The group has reportedly given migrants until the end of the month to vacate the area, sparking concern among vulnerable families who say they have nowhere else to go.
Several families have been camping outside the Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre in Durban in the hope of accessing documentation and assistance as they face an uncertain future.
The latest deadline comes just days after tensions at the site escalated, with an operation involving the group turning violent.
Police have, however, indicated that they will continue with their normal policing operations and that the ultimatum will not alter their approach.
Authorities say their priority remains maintaining law and order and responding to any incidents that may arise.
Meanwhile, Inter-Ministerial Committee chairperson Mmamoloko Kubayi said this week that more than 80,000 foreign nationals had been processed for deportation and repatriation between 14 June and 20 August.
Kubayi said Malawian nationals accounted for the largest number, followed by Zimbabweans and Mozambicans.
The latest developments have heightened concerns among migrants in Durban, particularly those who remain without secure accommodation or documentation.
