Former Hawks national head Dr Godfrey Lebeya has faced questions about his relationship with alleged police informant Malcolm X during his appearance before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.
Lebeya is being cross-examined over a South African Police Service (SAPS) operation conducted at the home of alleged underworld figure Katiso “KT” Molefe in December 2024.
The inquiry is investigating allegations surrounding the operation and claims of misconduct within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
During his testimony, Lebeya was questioned about contact he had with Malcolm X on the day of the operation.
Lebeya told the commission that Malcolm X had contacted him and raised concerns about individuals who allegedly appeared to be impersonating Hawks officers.
According to Lebeya, Malcolm X described the men as travelling in large, unmarked vehicles without registration plates.
“He indicated that the members have got big cars which do not have registration plates, which are not marked, and some of these members are wearing balaclavas,” Lebeya said.
The former Hawks boss’s testimony forms part of the commission’s broader examination of the December 2024 operation at Molefe’s residence and the alleged links between police officials, informants and individuals operating within the criminal underworld.
Lebeya is expected to face further questions about what he knew about the operation, his communication with Malcolm X and whether he took any action after receiving the warning.
