Dozens of undocumented foreign nationals have been arrested during a joint law-enforcement operation targeting businesses in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday by police, labour and immigration officials as authorities inspected businesses across the provincial capital.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli joined officials during the announced inspections, which focused on compliance with health, safety, labour and immigration regulations.
The provincial government said it was concerned by the number of businesses allegedly failing to comply with health and hygiene requirements.
Ntuli said some establishments were operating in unsuitable conditions, particularly those involved in preparing and selling food.
“It’s a situation really which is worrisome to see what our people eat,” Ntuli said.
He raised concerns about businesses allegedly operating from buildings that had not been properly approved by municipalities.
“You look at the conditions, the non-compliance in terms of the buildings. There are no plans submitted to the municipality. They simply just build,” he said.
The premier also criticised the working conditions faced by some employees, including low wages and lengthy working hours.
Ntuli said some workers were reportedly earning as little as R100 a day.
“Our people, they’re earning R100, only R100 a day,” he said.
He added that some employees told officials they started work as early as 6am, raising concerns about whether labour laws were being followed.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by provincial authorities and law-enforcement agencies to address illegal immigration, non-compliant businesses and poor working conditions.
Authorities have warned businesses that they could face enforcement action if they fail to meet the required health, safety, labour and immigration standards.
