Motorists travelling towards Umdloti on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast are being urged to plan ahead as a section of the M4 will be temporarily closed on Wednesday.
The closure at the M27 interchange is expected to remain in place until 3pm to allow major construction work to take place.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, the closure is necessary to facilitate the safe installation of precast bridge beams.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the work had been scheduled during off-peak hours to reduce disruption for motorists.
“The intention is to enable engineers and the team to ensure the safe installation of precast bridge beams,” Sibiya said.
Motorists will be diverted through the existing interchange on and off-ramps around the construction area.
Sibiya said the diversion routes would be clearly signposted, while the Road Traffic Inspectorate, together with the Durban Metro Police, would be deployed to manage traffic and assist motorists.
“Traffic officials will be on site to ensure safe traffic flow,” he said.
Motorists travelling in the area are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and to exercise caution when approaching the construction zone.
