Aviation expert Phutego Mojapele has defended the low-level formation flyover performed by two Airlink passenger aircraft over Cape Town’s DHL Stadium, describing it as an impressive demonstration of the specialised skills of South African pilots.
The aircraft conducted the flyover on Saturday ahead of the Springboks’ clash with the All Blacks at the stadium.
The stunt attracted international attention and sparked debate over aviation safety, with questions raised about whether the aircraft had flown too low and whether the manoeuvre posed a risk.
However, Mojapele has rejected claims that the flyover was dangerous, saying the operation would have been carefully planned and authorised by the relevant aviation authorities.
He said the manoeuvre demonstrated the level of training and expertise among South African pilots.
“Everything that you have seen, there is something that was well planned, coordinated, approved and given the thumbs-up from all the legal authorities that control the aviation space within the South African borders,” Mojapele said.
He added that there was no indication that anything had gone wrong during the flyover.
“And there is absolutely nothing wrong that has happened there,” he said.
Mojapele also pointed out that the South African Civil Aviation Authority had not indicated that the pilots contravened any approved aviation requirements during the display.
The flyover has nevertheless continued to generate discussion among aviation enthusiasts and members of the public, particularly over the safety considerations involved in operating passenger aircraft at low altitude and in formation.
