Workers at Impendle Local Municipality are expected to return to the picket line on Wednesday amid ongoing concerns over unpaid salaries.
Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) downed tools on Monday, claiming they have not received their salaries for the past four months. Workers say they have yet to receive a clear explanation for the non-payment.
Frustrated employees have been protesting outside the municipal offices, calling for government intervention to address the situation.
SAMWU is also expected to hand over a memorandum outlining the workers’ grievances to municipal management on Wednesday.
Municipal spokesperson Thami Mkhulisi says the municipality is prepared to engage with the workers once the memorandum has been received.
“We are yet to receive the memorandum of demands which will be submitted by SAMWU,” Mkhulisi said.
He added that the municipality remains committed to resolving the dispute through engagement with employees.
“We remain committed to engaging with workers once we’ve received the memorandum. We also urge the community of Impendle to remain calm as we work to resolve the matter speedily.”
