The death toll from the Lake Kariba ferry disaster has risen to 93 after another body was recovered from the water near Long Island.

Search and recovery operations remain underway as authorities continue efforts to locate those still missing following the ferry tragedy.

Officials say 77 people survived the disaster, bringing the estimated number of people who were on board, including crew members, to around 170.

The ferry capsized on 11 August while travelling on Lake Kariba, triggering a large-scale search and recovery operation involving authorities and emergency teams.

As recovery efforts continue, families and communities are also facing the difficult process of dealing with the recovered bodies, many of which have been affected by prolonged exposure to the water.

Shepard Mukono, Service Delivery Solutions Manager at Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour, said the condition of the bodies has meant that some victims have had to be taken directly for burial.

Mukono said this has been particularly difficult for affected families, as local cultural practices generally involve keeping the deceased overnight before burial.

He described the situation as traumatic for communities already dealing with the sudden loss of loved ones.

Authorities and funeral service providers are continuing to work with families to ensure that recovered victims are identified and laid to rest as the search operation continues.

The disaster has left communities mourning dozens of lives, while families continue to await answers and, in some cases, the recovery of missing relatives.
