TV personality and disbarred attorney Peet Viljoen has been denied bail in a multi-million-rand fraud case after a court ruled that he poses a flight risk.
Viljoen appeared before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday, where he faces more than 400 charges, including fraud and corruption.
The charges relate to the alleged sale of municipal property valued at approximately R27 million in 2010.
Viljoen was arrested after arriving at OR Tambo International Airport following his deportation from the United States.
He had reportedly been arrested in Florida over an alleged shoplifting incident at a major supermarket.
The court's decision to deny bail was based on concerns that Viljoen could flee the country if released.
Viljoen and his wife have since issued a joint public apology on social media following the controversy surrounding his arrest and have pledged to change their behaviour.
The fraud and corruption case will continue in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.
