A man known for dressing up as Santa Claus every year to spread Christmas cheer has delivered an extraordinary gift months ahead of the festive season.
Dave Bell, a well-known community Santa in Powhatan, Virginia, recently donated one of his kidneys to an anonymous recipient.
Bell has spent years bringing smiles to children in the community by dressing as Santa Claus during the Christmas season. But this time, his act of generosity went far beyond handing out presents.
Following the kidney donation, Bell was pictured recovering at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital while wearing his trademark Santa hat.
“I have two of these things, and I only need one,” Bell said. “There’s somebody who has none and they need one.”
Bell had to lose 40 pounds before he could qualify as a kidney donor. With the operation now behind him, he faces the challenge of recovering and getting back into shape before the festive season arrives.
Despite the physical demands of the procedure, Bell said his decision to donate was driven by the same spirit of generosity that has defined his role as Santa Claus.
Dr Amanda Bailey, a transplant surgeon at the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, said Bell’s story highlights the life-changing impact of organ donation.
“Stories like Dave’s make organ donation feel real and personal,” Bailey told WTVR. “They show that donation is possible and that one person can make an enormous difference in someone else’s life.”
While Santa may still have several months before his busiest season begins, Bell has already delivered what could be his most meaningful gift yet — the chance for an anonymous recipient to live a healthier life.
