KwaZulu-Natal is preparing for another cold snap next week, with a powerful cold front expected to bring heavy rain, snow, strong winds and rough seas to parts of the province.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned residents of potentially hazardous conditions from Monday, including localised flooding, power outages and difficult travel conditions.
The weather system is expected to make landfall over the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Sunday before moving eastwards across the country.
SAWS senior forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said KwaZulu-Natal could experience cold to very cold conditions from Monday, accompanied by widespread rain and showers.
Snow is also forecast over mountainous areas of the province, with some mountain passes potentially affected.
“The main impacts will include localised flooding of low-lying areas, roads, bridges, and informal settlements due to persistent rainfall,” Chiloane said.
Strong and potentially damaging winds could also result in fallen trees, damage to roofs and power interruptions, while motorists may face dangerous driving conditions.
Along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, rough seas and damaging waves are expected to pose a risk to small vessels and people taking part in coastal activities.
The very cold temperatures could also affect vulnerable communities and livestock, while snowfall in mountainous areas may disrupt travel.
Residents are being urged to monitor weather updates and take precautions as the cold front moves across the province.
