A chance discovery in a Colorado basement has helped launch the extraordinary musical career of a young piano prodigy, thanks to the generosity of a stranger who was captivated by his talent.
The story of Jude Kofie was featured by CBS News’ “On the Road” with Steve Hartman and began with an old electric keyboard that had been sitting unused in a basement for years.
At just nine years old, Jude, the autistic son of Ghanaian immigrant Isiah Kofie, discovered the keyboard and began playing. What followed revealed a remarkable musical ability that his family had never known existed.
Jude quickly began demonstrating an extraordinary talent for music, prompting local media to take notice.
Among those who heard about the young pianist was Bill Magnuson, a local piano tuner and lifelong piano enthusiast. Intrigued by the reports, Magnuson attended one of Jude’s performances to see his talent for himself.
“He’s beyond special,” Magnuson told Hartman. “He’s Mozart level. It’s coming from somewhere beyond.”
After learning more about Jude’s family, including Isiah’s journey as an immigrant raising four children while regularly sending money to relatives in Ghana, Magnuson decided he wanted to help give the young musician an opportunity to develop his gift.
His gesture was far more generous than the family could have imagined.
One day, a truck arrived at the Kofie family home. Magnuson had used a significant portion of his family inheritance to purchase a brand-new grand piano for Jude, worth around $15,000.
The gift left the family overwhelmed with emotion.
“[For] somebody to just love your son like that by making sure that his future is secured, we are super thankful,” Isiah said.
Magnuson’s generosity did not end with the piano. He also offered Jude lifetime piano-tuning services and arranged professional lessons to help him further develop his extraordinary abilities.
Five years after that initial discovery, Jude has grown from a nine-year-old musical prodigy into a 14-year-old touring pianist with his own album, Introducing: Jude Kofie.
What began with an abandoned keyboard and a remarkable natural talent has since become a promising musical career, made possible in large part by the generosity of a man who was initially a complete stranger.
As Hartman concluded, Magnuson may have arrived as a stranger, but after changing Jude’s life, he is certainly one no longer.
