Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made box office history, becoming the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time after earning an estimated $360 million across the United States and Canada.
The latest instalment in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, starring British actor Tom Holland as Peter Parker, exceeded its initial estimate of $355 million, according to Sony Pictures.
The record-breaking debut puts the film ahead of Avengers: Endgame, which opened to $357 million domestically in 2019. The figures have not been adjusted for inflation.
With its domestic performance included, Brand New Day has generated $932 million globally during its opening weekend. Despite its record in North America, it remains behind Avengers: Endgame’s massive $1.2 billion worldwide debut.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day follows Peter Parker as he lives in isolation after erasing his identity from the world. He also faces unexpected changes to his powers while attempting to rebuild his relationships with those closest to him.
The film sees Holland reunite on screen with Zendaya, who plays MJ, and Jacob Batalon as Ned. The story also introduces a new threat to New York City, forcing Spider-Man back into action.
The cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh and Sadie Sink, with the film serving as a major release ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December.
Entertainment publication Variety described the opening as “mind-boggling”, noting that Brand New Day and Avengers: Endgame are the only films to have crossed the $300 million mark in a single domestic weekend.
The achievement is particularly notable because the film faced competition from Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, which had secured many IMAX screens.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to begin its IMAX run this coming weekend, potentially giving its box office performance another boost.
