South African motorists will see mixed changes at the pumps from Wednesday, with petrol prices set to decrease while diesel prices rise sharply.
The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Department has announced the official fuel price adjustments for August.
Both grades of petrol will become cheaper, with the prices of 93 and 95 octane petrol set to fall by 52 cents per litre.
Diesel motorists, however, will face significant increases. Diesel prices will rise by between R1.23 and R1.38 per litre.
The department attributed the adjustments to several factors, including higher international diesel prices, a weaker rand against the US dollar and renewed geopolitical tensions that have disrupted global oil markets.
According to the department, a reduction in the slate levy helped cushion the impact on petrol prices and prevented a significantly larger increase.
The new fuel prices will come into effect on Wednesday, 5 August.
Motorists are therefore expected to pay less for petrol but considerably more for diesel from the start of the new pricing cycle.
