The Western Cape High Court has ordered Parliament's Section 89 Impeachment Committee to suspend its public proceedings pending the outcome of President Cyril Ramaphosa's legal challenge to the independent panel's Phala Phala report.
Ramaphosa approached the court seeking an interim interdict to halt the impeachment process while he pursues a review of the Section 89 Independent Panel report, which concluded that there was sufficient evidence to suggest he had a case to answer regarding the theft of foreign currency from his Phala Phala farm.
The Section 89 Impeachment Committee was established after the Constitutional Court ruled in May that the National Assembly had acted irrationally when it voted against adopting the independent panel's report. The apex court ordered Parliament to institute impeachment proceedings against the President.
The High Court's ruling means the committee will be unable to continue its public proceedings until Ramaphosa's review application has been considered.
The President's application to review the findings of the Section 89 Independent Panel is scheduled to be heard in September.
