The Finance Ministry is expected to provide further details on the decision to withhold funding from 69 municipalities across South Africa over non-compliance with financial management regulations.

Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen is set to outline the reasons behind the intervention and explain the measures being taken to improve financial governance at affected municipalities.

The National Treasury announced that it is temporarily withholding funds from 69 municipalities, including the metropolitan municipalities of Johannesburg, Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay and Mangaung, citing persistent failures to comply with the Municipal Finance Management Act and related regulations.

Treasury has maintained that the decision is intended to correct poor financial management practices rather than punish municipalities.

According to the department, the affected municipalities were given sufficient notice of their non-compliance and were offered support and an opportunity to address the shortcomings before the funding was withheld.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero is expected to brief the media on Wednesday afternoon on the city's financial position following Treasury's decision.

Morero is expected to outline the City's response to the funding intervention and explain its potential implications for municipal finances, ongoing operations and service delivery to residents.

The briefing comes as municipalities face increasing pressure to strengthen financial management and improve accountability in the use of public funds.
