The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that one person died while travelling on a bus from the Musina Repatriation Centre to the Beitbridge Border Post on Sunday night.

According to the department, the individual was among a group of undocumented migrants being transported for repatriation. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Project lead Albert Matsaung said the buses that departed from the Musina Repatriation Centre were transporting migrants to Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Matsaung explained that after passengers had boarded and the buses departed at around 10:30pm, one of the bus drivers returned to the repatriation centre after an incident occurred approximately 15 kilometres into the journey.

He said all passengers appeared to be in good condition when they boarded the buses.

"The information we received from the driver and fellow passengers is that one person died while the bus was travelling to the port of entry. The death did not occur at the repatriation centre," Matsaung said.

Following the incident, the bus driver turned the vehicle around and returned to the Musina Repatriation Centre.

The Department of Home Affairs said the circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation, and the cause will be determined through the appropriate processes.
