An English sports journalist has been reunited with a wallet he unknowingly lost more than three decades ago after it was discovered during a community project in West Yorkshire.
The wallet belonged to 63-year-old Mark Dexter, a former sports reporter who covered Leeds United for the Yorkshire Evening Post during the early 1990s.
Among the items found inside was a Leeds United membership card from the 1992–93 Premier League season, along with other personal belongings that had remained preserved for more than 30 years.
The wallet was discovered by Claire Wilson, who runs a local forest school. While clearing overgrown vegetation as part of a community project, she uncovered the wallet in an area that was previously a private garden and later formed part of a nearby hotel property.
Hoping to identify its owner, Wilson shared photographs of the wallet's contents on Facebook, including the Leeds United membership card.
The post caught the attention of Dexter's wife, who recognised the card and informed her husband before the pair collected the long-lost wallet.
Dexter, who once lived in the nearby village of Rawdon, said he has no memory of ever losing the wallet and remains puzzled as to how it ended up where it was found.
"I've no recollection of ever walking down there at any time in the past, so I've no idea how it's got there," he said.
He speculated that the wallet may have been stolen during a night out many years ago, possibly after an evening at local pubs or while attending a cricket match, although he said he has no way of knowing for certain.
Reflecting on the discovery, Dexter joked that, as a sports reporter, he should have looked happier in the photograph on his old Leeds United membership card.
The unexpected reunion also prompted him to reflect on that chapter of his life.
"In 1992 I was 30 and happy, having a good time, loving journalism and loving working in newspapers. It was just great," he said.
The remarkable discovery has become a nostalgic reminder of the past, with the wallet serving as an unlikely time capsule more than 30 years after it disappeared.
