Magistrate Ignatius Du Preez has imposed a harsher sentence than that proposed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala following a plea agreement in which he also agreed to cooperate with the State.
The Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court found that the recommended 15-year sentence was not appropriate in relation to the R228 million Medicare24 tender fraud and corruption case.
Matlala, who has been described in court proceedings as an alleged underworld figure, previously pleaded guilty in the hope of securing a more lenient sentence under the plea bargain arrangement.
Despite the agreement between the defence and the NPA, the court ultimately imposed a sentence double that which had been proposed, with the magistrate stating that the recommended term did not reflect the seriousness of the offences.
As part of the arrangement, Matlala has turned state witness and is expected to assist investigators in the broader probe, which may include testimony implicating additional individuals linked to the case.
Further legal proceedings are expected as the matter continues.
