Government has urged calm amid growing concerns within migrant communities ahead of the unofficial 30 June deadline set by anti-migrant groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.
Government spokesperson William Baloyi said authorities are aware of fears among migrants regarding their safety as planned protest action takes place in several parts of the country.
According to Baloyi, more than 18,000 foreign nationals had been processed for deportation and voluntary repatriation as of Saturday. He added that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has opened 10 criminal cases relating to the intimidation of migrants and the incitement of violence.
Baloyi encouraged anyone who feels threatened or unsafe to immediately report incidents to law enforcement agencies and relevant government authorities.
"Government unequivocally condemns all forms of intimidation, harassment or violence directed at any individual within the Republic, irrespective of their nationality or immigration status," Baloyi said.
"Law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service, have been placed on high alert to prevent any unlawful activities. Individuals or groups found engaging in acts of violence, intimidation or incitement will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law."
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal police have launched a double murder investigation following the deaths of two foreign nationals in Sundumbili, near Mandini.
The men were found dead in the early hours of Sunday after they allegedly stabbed each other while walking home from a tavern.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said preliminary investigations indicate that both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
"Information available at this stage suggests that the two deceased were walking from the tavern while under the influence of alcohol when they stabbed each other. One of the victims was found by community members a few minutes away from the initial scene. It is believed they succumbed to the multiple stab wounds they sustained," Netshiunda said.
He added that police are searching for a third individual, who is of the same nationality as the deceased and is believed to have witnessed the incident. Authorities are seeking the person's assistance as investigations continue.
